What is Exposed Aggregate Concrete?
Exposed aggregate, a decorative concrete finish, is making a comeback among builders and homeowners. It can be used in a variety of outdoor living settings, but is especially well-suited for concrete pool decks due to the traction it offers on wet surfaces. Exposed aggregate is achieved when the thin layer of cement is removed from the surface; this exposes the aggregates that are an integral part of the concrete such as various types of stone and sands. These aggregates can either be batched into the concrete mix or seeded on to the surface. Gruttadaurio Masonry offers exposed aggregate in two textures:
1. Sand Finish (mostly sand and some small pebbles are visibly exposed)
2. Coarse Finish (mostly pebbles, sized 1/8” to ¼” and some sand are visibly exposed)
Versatility
Although exposed aggregate is attractive and practical for all of your outdoor living spaces; patios, walkways, sidewalks, driveways, steps, and more; it’s especially ideal for concrete pool decks due to its slip resistant qualities.
Exposed aggregate can be combined with other decorative concrete surface treatments such stamped concrete, textured and broom finished concrete and decorative borders. Various integral colors can also be added to the concrete. The versatility of exposed aggregate can make for a stunning outdoor living area.
Durability
Exposed aggregate finishes fare extremely well in heavy traffic areas due to its “pre-worn” appearance. In typical troweled and broom finished applicatications heavy traffic will naturally wear through the cement layer that is carefully broom finished or toweled into the concrete. This natural wearing will expose the aggregate below in just those affected areas, causing the broom or troweled finish to look inconsistent.
An exposed aggregate finish maintains its quality appearance from the time of its initial install till the end of its useful life.
Low Maintenance
Exposed aggregate surfaces are the lowest maintenance finish offered. Sealing an exposed aggregate finish after the first complimentary sealing is not critical to maintain its great appearance and texture. This is contrary to stamped concrete applications where sealers are responsible for bringing out colors and providing slip resistance.
Affordability
Using exposed aggregate on your outdoor living areas is a long-term, cost-effective option due to considerable lower sealing costs.
